A Human Guinea Pig for the greater good?

I wasn’t even sure that I really wanted to write today’s blog as I am so unbelievably tired of this topic, frustrate beyond words and sad to watch what is becoming of our society and how COVID-19 has not only managed to divide nations but also humanity. There is a whole new form of racism – masks racism. But I wanted to write today about something else, albeit related to it…

Last weekend I was at a friends birthday party and I always enjoy meeting new and interesting people. All in all it was a lovely evening if it weren’t for that one topic that seems to – sooner or later – inevitably pop up…

I am of course talking about COVID-19 and the consequences for mankind. The conversation on that evening with a young woman was quite a surprise for me and rather disturbing. And of course I accept other people’s opinions, even if I do not share them (I am not one to missionize) but this was rather unexpected.

She said that she was very much looking forward to a vaccine for COVID-19, hoping it would come very soon, and that she would voluntarily be one the first to get vaccinated. I looked at her in utter disbelief and all I could say was: “Brave choice”. She first misunderstood my words as admiration and approval which I can assure you it wasn’t, it was shock and disbelief more than anything else. But I am insatiably curious and open to good arguments so I had to ask her why she wanted to do that.

Her argument was that the vaccine has to be tested on humans sooner or later and as she is young and healthy, she is the perfect candidate and her friend nodded vigerously. So I asked her if she wanted to be a human guinea pig at which she said; “Yes, for the greater good”.

Perhaps one day I will be proven wrong but common sense and conversations with doctors and phamacists tell me that a really safe vaccine takes up to 10 years in development. Even considering constantly improving technology, halving this time, a halfway safe vaccine could be available by 2025.

I vaguely remembered a quickly whipped up vaccine against a flu some years ago that was developed and produced for a hideous amount of money to then be destroyed for an equally hideous amount of money.

Since June 2020, the University Medical Centre Tübingen, Germany has been testing a vaccine by CureVac https://www.curevac.com//news, on subject groups and are currently looking for more human guinea pigs to test the vaccine, paying an expence allowance of 1300 Euros https://www.swp.de/suedwesten/staedte/reutlingen/corona-bw-aktuell-curevac-universitaet-tuebingen-sucht-nach-probanden-fuer-impfstoff-studie-47254159.html.

Again, I am no expert but I dare question things that are happening around me. I suppose what I am trying to say (possibly with too many words) that I simply cannot understand how anyone would voluntarily become a human guinea pig and risk their health and possibly their life… I find this absloutely terrifying.
